After we build your fantastic new website, it will need to be “hosted” to appear on the internet. There is typically an annual fee associated with this that the hosting company charges you. As a service to you, Phoenix Web Designer has its own servers where we host many client websites for a nominal fee. But you certainly don’t have to host your site with us. Read on for more information about this service and the benefits of different hosting services.
All websites found on the internet must be put on a special kind of computer that has an “address” known to the internet. This “internet server” is simply a computer set up for this kind of thing. This computer may have hundreds of websites on it. It’s probably easiest to think of the server as an apartment building. The websites would then be considered tenants, or apartments. For your website to live there (hosted there), you have to pay rent. The owner of the server would be considered the landlord, or the “HOST”. The landlord must provide some basic necessities to its tenants such as a certain level of security and upkeep.
In keeping with our apartment building analogy from above, not all apartment buildings, landlords, amenities and neighbors are alike. Cheap hosting services typically put a lot of websites on their servers, don’t provide the level of service you might need and don’t really care who they rent to.
These things might seem like no real issue to you, but consider these common, real-life problems you very well could experience. First of all, let’s look at your neighbors; the hundreds or thousands of other websites that share your server. Cheap server rates tend to attract unscrupulous neighbors. That means people who build scam websites and who do a variety of illicit activities from the server they are on. There are a LOT of them. So who cares what they do in the apartment next door, you might ask. Well, what they do affects the entire server or building. When they get caught or banned for their activities, internet security companies and search engines will blacklist the entire server address. That means your website will no longer appear on the internet for many, if not all people trying to visit. Typically, these people will see a message that this website has been deemed harmful or dangerous to visit. It’s really not a good look for your business. And it takes a lot of effort to get your website whitelisted again.
Then there’s the issue of lagging support time. You are simply a number to these cheap hosting providers. They will commonly take a server down to install updates or to fix issues caused by your bad neighbors. And they do this without warning so it could be down without your knowledge and without any recourse. Then because you are only worth a few bucks a year to them, tech support is virtually non-existent. When we try to help a client with their hosting issues with these cheap hosting companies, we usually have to complete a “trouble ticket” which can take many days for them to get to and several more for them to actually fix the issue. So, if your website being down for a week or more at a time isn’t a big concern for you, then the savings might actually be worth it.
Quite frankly, we quickly grew tired of hosting companies taking too long to fix an issue with one of our client’s websites. The clients would get angry at us for not being able to help them faster and we were at the mercy of the hosting company’s lack of response. We also spent a lot of time trying to help client websites get off of blacklists caused by living on a server that houses sketchy other websites.
Having our own servers and offering our own hosting services means we have complete control. We only hosting sites that we’ve developed. So you know you’ll have good neighbors. We also have immediate, 24-hour access to fix any issues that might arise. Most importantly, we can do that within minutes or hours instead of days or weeks. That makes for happier clients and fewer sleepless nights for everyone.
